For Parents

Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce is an online Sesame Street toolkit with many resources for parents. Dr. Pedro-Carroll is an advisor on this project.

For parents who want to minimize conflict and provide the optimal situation for their children during and after divorce, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts provides some helpful information.

Divorce without Court: A Guide to Mediation & Collaborative Divorce, written by California attorney Katherine Stoner (Nolo, 2009) provides exactly what its title suggests, with clear, practical information on a full range of related topics and worksheets, including one on assessing children’s needs.

The Colorado Center for Divorce Mediation has been a leader in divorce mediation and the use of parenting plans. Their website offers some helpful models based on ongoing research and expert development. The Parenting Planning Tools may be especially helpful. Please remember, however, that laws differ from state to state. You’ll need to find appropriate legal and/or mediation resources that can help you with such matters in your state.

Dinosaurs Divorce: A Guide for Changing Families, written by Marc Brown and Laurie Krazny Brown (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 1988) is a wonderful tool for parents to help young children understand divorce, the feelings they have about it, and the changes in their lives.

It's Not Your Fault, Koko Bear: A Read-Together Book for Parents and Young Children During Divorce, by Vicki Lansky (Book Peddlers, 1999) can help young children with one of their biggest hidden fears—that they caused their parents’ divorce.

The American Psychological Association provides information on parenting, families, divorce, and finding licensed professional psychologists.
